Gold Coast Surfer Fined $2K for Riding Waves with Pet Python

A Gold Coast resident, Higor Fiuza, has been fined over $2,000 for an unusual stunt he pulled off while surfing. Fiuza, who had gained notoriety online for surfing with his pet python, Shiva, was found to be in violation of regulations when he took the snake into the public domain.

Fiuza and Shiva had been spotted riding the waves at Rainbow Bay on multiple occasions, capturing the curiosity of beachgoers and the attention of news outlets. The unusual duo seemed to have established a unique bond, with Shiva swimming alongside Fiuza and returning to the surfboard each time, seemingly awaiting the perfect wave.

However, Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science wildlife officers raised concerns after a viral video showcasing Fiuza and Shiva’s surfing adventures started making rounds. The officers emphasized that snakes, being cold-blooded creatures, typically avoid water. Furthermore, they highlighted that only sea snakes should be found in the ocean, not pythons like Shiva.

While Fiuza possessed the necessary permit to keep Shiva as a pet, he lacked the required authorization to take the python out in public. The Department of Environment and Science subsequently imposed a hefty fine on Fiuza for his actions.

Jonathan McDonald, a wildlife officer, stressed that taking native pets out in public can cause unnecessary stress to the animals. He explained that such situations could lead to unpredictable behavior and danger for both the animals and the public. McDonald further emphasized that permit holders should refrain from displaying their native animals in public unless it serves a specific approved purpose and ensures the welfare of the animals and the safety of the public, in compliance with relevant codes.

The incident involving Fiuza and Shiva has sparked debate among animal lovers and experts. Some argue that animals should be allowed to engage in activities outside their natural habitats, as long as their welfare is not compromised. Others support the strict regulations, stating that the well-being of animals should always be the priority.

Fiuza’s fine serves as a reminder that even with the necessary permits for keeping exotic pets, additional permissions may be required for public outings. It highlights the importance of adhering to regulations and considering the welfare of animals in all circumstances.

As for Shiva, she may have to find another way to enjoy the waves, staying within the confines of her owner’s property.
