Uttar Pradesh Aims to Install 30,000 Solar Pumps to Meet Energy Needs, Promote Clean Agriculture, India

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is making significant strides towards meeting its energy needs through renewable sources. The state government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has set an ambitious target to install over 30,000 solar photovoltaic irrigation pumps under the PM KUSUM Yojana. This initiative aims to promote clean agriculture while providing clean energy options to farmers. The installation of these solar pumps will help farmers adopt solar-powered irrigation, offering them an affordable and eco-friendly energy source. Not only will this contribute to environmental preservation, but it will also mitigate the threat of climate change by reducing carbon emissions in the region. The government will provide a grant of 60 percent of the benchmark cost for pumps up to 7.5 horsepower, with the central and state governments sharing the remaining cost. Interested farmers can obtain a loan from a bank to cover their share, with the state and central governments contributing towards an interest rebate. This project will lead to a reduction in irrigation costs, improve agricultural operations’ efficiency, and promote sustainability. The UPNEDA will assist in the installation of various solar pump models, and interested farmers can apply through the Agriculture Department’s website.
