Unhealthy Snacks Increase Stroke and Cardiovascular Risks by 25%, Finds Study

Unhealthy snacking habits have been found to significantly increase the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, according to a recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition. The research, conducted by scientists from the School of Life Course & Population Sciences and ZOE, analyzed the snacking behaviors of 854 participants from the ZOE PREDICT project.

The study discovered that only half of the participants maintained a balanced nutritional intake in their meals and snacks, leading to detrimental effects on health markers such as blood sugar and fat levels. In fact, consuming unhealthy snacks canceled out the beneficial impacts of nutritious meals for 25 percent of individuals, making them more susceptible to stroke and cardiovascular ailments.

Dr. Sarah Berry, Chief Scientist at ZOE and affiliated with King’s College London, highlighted the importance of snacking in our daily lives, with 95 percent of people engaging in this habit. She emphasized that making simple dietary adjustments can have a significant impact on health. Dr. Berry recommended replacing unhealthy snacks like cookies, chips, and cakes with nutritious options such as fruits and nuts.

Contrary to common belief, snacking itself is not detrimental to health if high-quality snacks are chosen. The analysis showed that regular consumption of nutritious snacks is actually associated with maintaining a healthy weight and experiencing positive effects on metabolic health and appetite control.

However, a substantial number of individuals still include unhealthy snacks in their diets despite consuming balanced main meals. These low-quality snacks, often processed and high in sugar, have been linked to increased hunger and worse health indicators. Unhealthy snacking has been associated with higher BMI, visceral fat, and post-meal triglyceride levels, all of which are risk factors for metabolic disorders including obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.

The timing of snacking also matters, as late-night snacks, particularly those high in calories, fat, and sugar, have been found to be associated with poorer blood markers.

It is crucial for individuals to be mindful of their snacking choices and prioritize nutritious options. By replacing unhealthy snacks with healthier alternatives, individuals can reduce their risk of developing stroke and cardiovascular disease while improving their overall health.
