Antrim Man Arrested for Choking Girlfriend Days After Giving Birth – Faces Multiple Charges

Antrim, Northern Ireland – In a disturbing turn of events, a man has been arrested for allegedly choking his girlfriend just days after she gave birth to their child. The accused, Daryl Somers, appeared in court facing multiple charges, including actual bodily harm, breaking into the victim’s home, and common assault.

The incidents occurred on July 15 and September 10, with Somers being accused of assaulting his girlfriend on both occasions. However, when he was scheduled to appear in court last month, he failed to show up, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest.

The warrant was executed last Sunday when Somers was apprehended after his partner contacted the police about yet another alleged assault. During his appearance at Antrim Magistrates Court in Ballymena, Somers confirmed that he understood the nine charges against him, two from July and seven from September.

According to a police officer who testified at the hearing, the victim called the police to report domestic violence, stating, My house is red-flagged for domestic violence. I need the police. When the officers arrived, she claimed that Somers had struck her face after she asked for a hug. Subsequently, he allegedly grabbed her by the neck and choked her, leaving her unable to breathe for approximately 20 seconds. She was only able to escape his grip by sticking her finger in his mouth.

Following his arrest, Somers justified his actions by telling the officers he had to restrain her due to her mental health. He further alleged that the victim had tied a cord around her neck and threatened to blame him for any harm caused.

Despite being freed on bail, Somers continued to commit acts of violence. The court was informed of another incident where Somers and the alleged victim had a few drinks together at her residence after encountering each other in a chip shop. However, after he left and she discovered him in the company of another woman, Somers allegedly called her a f****** embarrassment before grabbing her by the throat and pinning her against a fence. In a shocking turn of events, he then threw her to the ground and repeatedly hit her head against the floor.

When questioned about this second attack, Somers denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the victim frequently engaged in self-harm, which he believed caused her injuries. However, she fled to her father’s house to seek refuge, only for Somers to follow and allegedly assault her once again, choking her and screaming in her face.

Opposing bail, a police officer emphasized the risk of further offenses and witness interference if Somers were to be released. District Judge Nigel Broderick ultimately denied bail, stating, It is not without significance that the injured party thought she would be killed.

The case has been adjourned until October 10, and it is essential that justice is served in this distressing situation. Domestic violence is an abhorrent crime, and it is crucial that victims receive the necessary support and protection.
