23-Year-Old Allegedly Killed by GSU Officers: Police Investigate Death with Severe Body Injuries

A 23-year-old man has tragically lost his life in an incident that has sparked controversy and calls for justice. According to reports, the young man, identified as Nyae Ngala Chamtu, was allegedly killed by GSU (General Service Unit) officers in Sirirani village, Kazamoyo, within the Samburu subcounty. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

The incident took place on Saturday morning when GSU officers reportedly raided the village and forcefully removed Chamtu from his home. Witnesses claim that Chamtu was subjected to a prolonged period of corporal punishment, resulting in severe body injuries. Assistant Chief Jackson Karisa Chengo confirmed that Chamtu succumbed to multiple injuries.

Eyewitnesses reveal that the officers hauled Chamtu to a nearby makeshift camp, where the alleged assault continued for hours. He was heard screaming in pain, prompting concerned relatives to rush to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered Chamtu lying almost unconscious, as the officers continued to beat him mercilessly.

Villagers state that Chamtu was subjected to random kicks and whippings, leaving him with numerous bodily wounds from his head to his legs. The lower part of his body was heavily swollen, and it appeared that his ribs were badly injured, making it difficult for Chamtu to breathe properly.

Disturbingly, the GSU officers reportedly barricaded the roads following the incident, preventing Chamtu’s family from seeking immediate medical attention. They also imposed a curfew, prohibiting anyone from making phone calls or leaving the area. Consequently, Chamtu’s family could only transport him to Silaloni Hospital five hours later, by which time he had tragically passed away.

Authorities are taking the matter seriously, with the police commencing investigations into the incident. Samburu subcounty Police Commander Fredrick Ombaka expressed his sympathy to the bereaved family and assured them that justice would be served. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also taken up the case, working alongside the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

County Police Commander Stephen Ngetich emphasized that no one is above the law. If the GSU officers are found guilty, they will face disciplinary action. Ngetich called for calm among the local community and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.

Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo condemned the incident, describing it as inhumane and unnecessary. He connected the incident to a long-standing land dispute between residents and a private developer in the area. Kombo demanded that the responsible GSU officers be held accountable for their actions.

As the investigation unfolds, the community eagerly awaits justice for Nyae Ngala Chamtu’s untimely death. The incident has highlighted the need for law enforcement officers to adhere to professional standards and respect the rights and lives of individuals they are sworn to protect.
