Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked to Popular California Music Venue

In California, health officials are reporting a suspected case of hepatitis A linked to the Ivy Lounge at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston. The outbreak has prompted the Oakland County Health Division to issue a health advisory and recommend actions for individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

The Health Division advises all season members, their guests, and staff who consumed food at the Ivy Lounge between August 26 and September 8 to monitor for symptoms and, if unvaccinated for hepatitis A, to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Dr. Russell Faust, Oakland County medical director, emphasizes that the risk of transmission in this specific situation is low, but vaccination is still recommended as a preventive measure.

To help mitigate the potential spread of hepatitis A, unvaccinated individuals who were possibly exposed to the virus at specific concert dates are encouraged to receive the vaccine within 14 days of exposure. The Health Division is extending its hours and hosting special hepatitis A vaccine clinics to accommodate those in need.

The symptoms of hepatitis A include sudden abdominal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, headache, dark urine, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin and eyes. These symptoms may appear anywhere from two to six weeks after exposure. In severe cases, especially among those with pre-existing illnesses or compromised immune systems, hepatitis A can lead to liver failure.

The Oakland County Health Division has provided a breakdown of exposure dates and recommended actions for individuals who attended concerts at the Ivy Lounge. It is important for those who may have been exposed to watch for symptoms and contact their healthcare provider if they become ill.

Health Division offices are located at the North Oakland Health Center in Pontiac and the South Oakland Health Center in Southfield. For those with insurance, it is recommended to check with their provider for possible coverage. However, no one will be denied services due to inability to pay, as a discounted/sliding fee schedule is available.

In conclusion, the Oakland County Health Division is taking swift action to address the suspected hepatitis A outbreak linked to the Ivy Lounge at Pine Knob Music Theatre. Individuals who may have been exposed are advised to monitor for symptoms, get vaccinated if unvaccinated, and seek medical attention if necessary. For more information, including vaccine clinic dates and locations, individuals can visit the Health Division’s website or contact Nurse on Call.
