Minnesota Vikings RB Receives Racist Messages After Game, NFL and Team Condemn Hate

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison recently revealed that he received racist messages after the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football. Mattison shared screenshots of the messages, which contained racial slurs and even told him to take his own life. The disturbing incident sparked outrage among fans and prompted both the NFL and the Vikings to issue statements condemning the hate.

In an Instagram post, Mattison expressed his frustration with the offensive messages, stating, Y’all can come at me all you want about fantasy and ‘you suck’ blah, blah, blah. I really could care less. But this sh*t is unacceptable… Really reflect on WTF you say and how it could affect someone. Under the helmet, I am a human… a father… a son. This is sick.

Although the screenshots were later deleted from his account, the impact of the offensive messages remains. The Vikings, in their statement, expressed their disgust towards the racial slurs directed at Mattison, emphasizing that there is no room for such words or actions in sports or society. They vowed to continue fighting against hate and to foster an inclusive and diverse community that values everyone’s unique backgrounds.

The NFL also strongly condemned the racist comments, deeming the behavior completely unacceptable not only in the league but anywhere else. They stood firmly with Mattison and reminded fans to recognize the humanity of all players and appreciate their contributions to the game.

Mattison’s agent, CJ LaBoy, voiced his support for his client and condemned the hate speech. LaBoy emphasized that this kind of vitriol is unfortunately not uncommon for African American athletes, who have dealt with such filth throughout their lives. He called for stricter consequences for those using such language, suggesting that universities, stadiums, and teams should ban offenders for life.

Alexander Mattison, a talented player drafted by the Vikings in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, rushed for 28 yards but lost a fumble in the team’s recent loss. He has assumed the starting position this season after Dalvin Cook’s departure to the New York Jets.

The incident involving Mattison highlights the ongoing issue of racism in sports and society. It serves as a reminder that athletes, regardless of their accomplishments on the field, are also human beings who deserve respect and understanding. The support from the NFL, the Vikings, and Mattison’s agent is a positive step towards creating an environment where hate speech has no place.

The Vikings’ next game is scheduled for September 24 when they will host the Los Angeles Chargers. As the NFL continues to address this incident, fans and the league alike hope to create a safe and inclusive environment for all players, free from racism and prejudice.
