NHL Investigates Allegations of Blue Jackets Coach Violating Player Privacy, Sparks Controversy
The NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) has launched an investigation into allegations that Columbus Blue Jackets coach Mike Babcock violated players’ privacy by asking to see photos on their phones. NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh and assistant executive director Ron Hainsey traveled to Columbus to meet with Blue Jackets players at Nationwide Arena regarding the matter.
The controversy began when former player Paul Bissonnette discussed the alleged incident on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast. Bissonnette claimed that Babcock asked Columbus players to show him their phones and then proceeded to display images from the devices on his office TV. These allegations immediately caught the attention of both the league and the NHLPA, as well as hockey fans across the country.
The Blue Jackets have expressed their support for the NHLPA’s inquiry, as they are interested in determining whether any inappropriate actions took place. Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner was mentioned by Bissonnette as one of the players Babcock asked to share their phone contents.
Bissonnette’s comments prompted former NHL defenseman Mike Commodore to come forward and assert that he had heard Babcock engage in similar conduct during his coaching stints in Toronto and Detroit. Commodore even went as far as to label Babcock a pervert for going through individuals’ phones. He called upon NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to take action, questioning whether the league is a place where a narcissistic sociopath can exploit teenagers from a position of power.
In response to the allegations, both Babcock and Jenner issued statements through the Blue Jackets organization, denying any wrongdoing. Babcock explained that he had only intended to view family photos to better understand the players, while Jenner described the meeting as an opportunity to establish a positive relationship. The coach’s history of controversy was acknowledged, as he had previously faced accusations of mental abuse that ultimately led to his dismissal as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019.
The NHLPA’s investigation will aim to shed light on the situation and determine if there are any grounds for concern regarding Babcock’s actions.
