Salt Lake City’s Bid for 2034 Winter Olympics Endorsed by US Olympic Committee
Leadership of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has thrown its weight behind Salt Lake City’s bid to host another Winter Olympics, with a preference for 2034. The endorsement comes as no surprise, considering Salt Lake City’s successful hosting of the Winter Games in 2002. USOPC stated that 2034 would be a more desirable year than 2030 due to the 2028 Summer Olympics being held in Los Angeles.
This is a significant milestone for us, said Fraser Bullock, CEO of the Salt Lake City bid committee. We have a fantastic bid to offer the Olympic and Paralympic community. We have incredible venues in place, federal guarantees, and strong community support.
Salt Lake City’s bid is expected to face stiff competition from other countries vying to host the Winter Olympics in 2030. Sweden, Switzerland, and France are among those in the race. However, USOPC Chair Gene Sykes believes that Salt Lake City’s bid stands out among the rest. There are not likely to be bids that look more attractive than the Salt Lake City, Utah bid for 2030 or 2034, he stated.
USOPC has communicated its preference for 2034 to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, it is open to working with the IOC on a 2030 bid if needed. The IOC has expressed its intention to award the 2030 and 2034 host cities simultaneously in order to create stability in the Winter Games. This decision comes as the IOC faces a shrinking pool of potential bidders.
Fraser Bullock expressed optimism that the IOC would consider Salt Lake City’s offer. He hoped that discussions would take place during the IOC officials’ meeting in Mumbai next month.
The bid from Salt Lake City is supported by a strong backing from the local community. We have incredible public support, with 82% of the public and 100% of our political leadership behind us, Bullock added.
If chosen to host the 2034 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City would be prepared to showcase its world-class venues, federal guarantees, and the breathtaking natural beauty of Utah. The city is poised to provide a memorable and successful Winter Games experience for athletes and spectators alike.
As the bidding process unfolds, all eyes are on Salt Lake City’s bid and its potential to bring the Winter Games back to the United States in 2034. The endorsement from USOPC certainly strengthens their chances, and we eagerly await further developments in this exciting race to host the prestigious event.
