Republican Lawmakers Launch Impeachment Probe into President Biden’s Alleged Lies, Unlikely to Succeed
Republican lawmakers have initiated an investigation into the possible impeachment of President Joe Biden, alleging that he lied to the American people regarding his son Hunter’s controversial business dealings overseas. However, the chances of a successful impeachment remain highly unlikely.
Impeachment is outlined in the United States Constitution as a measure that Congress can take in the case of treason, bribery or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. The process involves two stages: the House of Representatives conducts a vote on articles of impeachment, and if approved, the Senate conducts a trial where a two-thirds majority is required for conviction.
Although articles of impeachment were approved by the House against former President Donald Trump in both 2019 and 2021, the Senate acquitted him both times. It is important to note that no president has ever been removed from office through impeachment.
Currently, Democrats control the Senate, which makes Biden’s impeachment unlikely given the political landscape. However, the Trumpist wing of the Republican Party has persistently called for Biden’s impeachment since his election in 2020.
Republican lawmakers now claim to have serious and credible allegations against Biden after securing a majority in the House this year. Speaker Kevin McCarthy states that the investigation is necessary, but some political analysts believe he is motivated by the fear of being replaced if he doesn’t support the impeachment probe.
Democrats argue that any impeachment inquiry would allow Trump to use the House of Representatives as a tool to influence the 2024 presidential election. Additionally, an impeachment inquiry could distract attention from the legal challenges that Trump currently faces, as he is set to undergo four trials involving 91 criminal charges over the coming year.
Political scientist Larry Sabato predicts that the Republican push for Biden’s impeachment will ultimately backfire, as he believes there is little or no evidence supporting their claims. However, the televised hearings on Hunter Biden’s affairs could tarnish President Biden’s reputation for honesty and integrity.
In another development, lawmakers are gearing up for a battle over Republican demands for significant budget cuts. Failure to reach an agreement on spending bills to fund the US government by the September 30 deadline could result in a government shutdown.
It remains to be seen how the impeachment probe and budget negotiations will unfold, but it is evident that the political landscape in the United States is undergoing significant tumult. With Democrats in control of the Senate and the lingering legal issues surrounding Trump, the impeachment of President Biden seems highly unlikely at this point.
