Government Invests $2.25M in New Zealand’s Rainbow Games Boost

The Rainbow Games has received a significant boost as the New Zealand government invests $2.25 million in the biennial event until 2028. This investment, made through the government’s Major Events Fund, showcases a monumental step towards inclusivity and community engagement. Tom Leonard, the event director, expressed his gratitude for the government’s support, stating that it ensures the Rainbow Games, which embraces the LGBTQI+ community and sports participation, becomes a biennial fixture on New Zealand’s sports calendar from 2024 to 2028.

Leonard emphasized that inclusion goes beyond mere participation; it’s about creating space and opportunities for everyone to benefit from sports. The government’s support guarantees that the rainbow of athletes continues to shine in safe and friendly competitions. With the inaugural Rainbow Games scheduled for April 4-8, 2024, the event promises a diverse range of 14 sports with both social and competitive divisions, offering a meaningful experience for all participants.

In addition to the main event, the Rainbow Games will also host a rangatahi event targeting youth, aiming to encourage their physical activity and foster their inclusion within the rainbow community. Kylie Hawker-Green, Manager of New Zealand Major Events, highlighted the strong alignment between the Rainbow Games and the Major Event fund’s objectives of creating social connection and celebrating New Zealand culture.

Aotearoa New Zealand is a welcoming and inclusive country, and we’re confident that our investment in the Rainbow Games will enhance connection and inclusion for Rainbow communities through sport, Hawker-Green said. The government is excited to witness players take to the sports arena, celebrating diversity and equity.

Overall, the government’s financial support ensures the Rainbow Games’ long-term future and establishes it as a premier sporting event in New Zealand. The investment will enable the event to expand and attract athletes from all backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive environment for the LGBTQI+ community. Through the Rainbow Games, New Zealand continues to make significant strides in championing diversity, equality, and sporting excellence.
