NFL Network Journalist Files Lawsuit Alleging Racial Discrimination by League and Network

Jim Trotter, a respected journalist with over three decades of experience covering the NFL, has filed a lawsuit against the league and NFL Network, accusing them of racial discrimination. Trotter claims that his contract was not renewed earlier this year in retaliation for questioning the league’s commitment to diversity during a conversation with commissioner Roger Goodell at the Super Bowl.

In his lawsuit, Trotter states that he was promised a contract renewal but was let go after raising concerns about the NFL’s record on discrimination. He believes that the non-renewal was a direct response to his activism on this issue.

Trotter’s 53-page lawsuit, filed in a Manhattan court, not only accuses the NFL and NFL Network of discrimination against him but also makes explosive claims about some of the league’s high-profile owners. According to Trotter, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made racist comments, suggesting that if black individuals felt marginalized, they should buy their own team and hire their preferred candidates.

The lawsuit alleges that Trotter reported the incident involving Jerry Jones to his superiors at NFL Network, but no action was taken. The Cowboys have not yet responded to these allegations.

Before his contract was up for renewal in 2023, Trotter had discussions with Sandra Nunez, the vice president responsible for the network’s on-air talent. He claims that Nunez expressed no concerns about his contract renewal and even discussed the possibility of an expanded role. However, everything changed after his public exchange with Commissioner Goodell.

In late March, Nunez called Trotter’s agent to inform him that his contract would not be renewed. This decision prompted Trotter to file the lawsuit seeking monetary damages and the appointment of a court-ordered monitor to investigate the league’s hiring, retention, and advancement practices for black individuals.

Trotter’s attorneys released a statement criticizing the NFL for the expressed racial animus by team owners and the lack of action taken by the league. They argue that the NFL should feel ashamed of its handling of these issues.

Since his departure from NFL Network, Trotter has joined sports publication The Athletic as a columnist. He is being represented by the same attorneys as former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores in his racial discrimination lawsuit against Goodell and the NFL.

The outcome of Jim Trotter’s lawsuit will undoubtedly shed light on important questions surrounding racial discrimination within the NFL and its associated networks. The case has the potential to hold the league accountable and prompt changes to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout all levels of the NFL organization and hierarchy.
