In a recent development, Eric Gavelek Munchel, famously known as Zip-Tie Guy, and his mother, Lisa Eisenhart, have been sentenced for their involvement in the Capitol riot that took place on January 6, 2021. Munchel has been given a prison sentence of nearly 5 years, while his mother will serve 2-and-a-half years.
The infamous photo of Munchel carrying zip ties in the Senate gallery during the riot went viral, capturing the attention of the public. Dressed in SWAT team attire, he was seen jumping over a railing. As Munchel and other rioters supporting former President Donald Trump made their way onto the gallery floor, legislators who were preparing to certify President Joe Biden’s electoral victory were forced to flee for their safety.
Munchel, a 32-year-old Tennessee bartender and newlywed, was subsequently arrested and faced charges of multiple felonies, including weapon-related offenses, as well as three misdemeanors. His mother, a 59-year-old registered nurse residing in Georgia, was also arrested and found guilty of conspiracy to commit obstruction and obstruction of an official proceeding, along with five related misdemeanors.
During the sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth handed down a combined prison term of 7.25 years for Munchel and Eisenhart. Eisenhart, who had donned her tactical vest and a MAGA hat during the riot, will serve 2.5 years, while her son will serve four years and nine months.
Munchel’s defense lawyers pleaded for leniency, claiming that he had attended the Capitol protest peacefully and that his tactical attire was merely a fashion statement. They also alleged that he carried a taser with him out of concern that the far-right group ANTIFA would instigate violence. However, charging documents contradicted these claims, revealing that Munchel forcefully entered the Capitol while shouting disruptive slogans.

Before her arrest, Eisenhart gave an interview to The Times of London, where she expressed her support for the riot, stating that she would rather die as a 57-year-old woman fighting against oppression than live under it.
