Virginia Football Returns Home, Honoring Slain Players in Emotional Home Opener
Saturday marks a significant moment for the Virginia football team as they return to their home field after a 10-month hiatus. However, this homecoming is bittersweet, as the Cavaliers are using this occasion to pay tribute to three players who tragically lost their lives last November. The tributes and dedications started on Friday with a poignant tree planting ceremony and the placement of a plaque to honor the fallen players as well as another injured player and a female student. The oak tree, capable of reaching heights of 60 feet and living for centuries, serves as a lasting reminder of the lives of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry. Just this week, authorities upgraded the murder charges against the former teammate accused in the attack, further underscoring the gravity of the loss.
Last year, the tragedy forced the cancellation of Virginia’s final two games, and instead of preparing for matches, the team found themselves attending funerals, participating in vigils, and mourning during a heartfelt memorial service. Their resilience and commitment to honor their fallen teammates led them to reconvene for spring practice.
The emotional weight was palpable during those 15 practice days, especially with shooting survivor Mike Hollins donning the team uniform. However, their first game back in Nashville against the formidable No. 9 Tennessee ended in defeat. Yet, this home game carries a different significance.
When the Cavaliers take to the field for kickoff, they will be running towards an end zone painted with the powerful words UVA Strong alongside the names and numbers of the three slain players. This end zone tribute will remain throughout the season as a constant reminder of their enduring legacy. Additionally, the team will wear helmet decals, and players wearing the numbers 1, 15, and 41 will don legacy patches. Even the visiting James Madison University Dukes will join in by wearing helmet decals of their own.
