The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has promised to revive the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for over 1.75 lakh employees, but implementation has stalled due to the state’s debt of Rs 3.12 lakh crore. The decision to revive the scheme means the state must also stop contributing Rs 3,000 crore annually to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. The Central government has also slashed the state’s borrowing limit from Rs 39,000 crore to Rs 21,000 crore. Opposition parties have criticised the AAP government for failing to push ahead with the scheme. Employees’ unions are also demanding the timely implementation of the scheme.
