Alan Kyerematen’s Complaints about Intimidation and Violence Inconsistent, Says Former MP
Former Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu constituency, Ras Mubarak, has criticized Alan Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade and Industry and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, for lacking the moral right to complain about intimidation and violence in the political arena. This comes after Kyerematen withdrew from the race for the NPP’s flagbearer position, citing incidents of intimidation among other reasons.
Mubarak argued that Kyerematen, as a senior member of the government, remained silent when violence marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in January 2019, leaving casualties and injuries. He also highlighted that Kyerematen was a beneficiary of the government’s actions during that time, which makes his current complaints about violence appear inconsistent.
The former MP further pointed out that Kyerematen did not speak out or complain during the violent incidents that unfolded during the 2020 general elections in which the verdict of the people was stolen. According to Mubarak, Kyerematen’s silence and lack of action during those times undermine his credibility to now raise concerns about violence.
Mubarak extended his criticism to other aspirants in the NPP flagbearer race, including Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong. He asserted that these individuals are not fit to lead the party due to their involvement in events that have caused pain to the country.
Alan Kyerematen announced his withdrawal from the race on September 5, 2023, citing various reasons including alleged intimidation of delegates during the recently held Super Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023.
It remains to be seen how the NPP will address these concerns and whether the party will take any action in response to Mubarak’s criticisms. As the race for the NPP flagbearer position continues, the party will need to carefully consider the credibility and history of its candidates in order to maintain a strong and united front.
