The Indian Union Home Ministry has set up a three-member Commission of Inquiry to investigate a recent outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, northeast India. The commission, chaired by Ajai Lamba, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, has been asked to submit its report to the Central government within six months of its first sitting. The inquiry will investigate the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities that began on May 3. The sequence of events leading up to the violence, lapses or dereliction of duty by authorities, and the adequacy of administrative measures to prevent and deal with the violence will also be probed. Retired civil servants Himanshu Shekhar Das and Aloka Prabhakar are also on the commission. During a four-day visit to Manipur between May 29 and June 1, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of a commission of inquiry into the violence.
