Young Americans and Chinese Collaborate to Enhance 19th Asian Games with AI

The upcoming 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, are set to receive a boost from a group of young individuals hailing from both China and the United States. With their combined expertise, these young innovators are working together to introduce new artificial intelligence (AI) services and functions that will enhance the sporting event.

Maurice Chong, a 20-year-old student from Peking University who hails from Washington state in the US, expresses his confidence in the potential of this collaborative effort. He believes that the intelligence and joint endeavors of young individuals from both nations will yield remarkable results surpassing what can be achieved through one-sided efforts alone.

Chong, who was previously a member of the Lincoln High School choir, reminisces about their performance for President Xi Jinping and his wife during Xi’s visit to the US in 2015. Inspired by President Xi’s quote, Read 10,000 books and travel 10,000 miles, Chong developed a keen interest in Chinese culture and longed to experience the authentic way of life and local customs in China.

In July, Chong took part in writing a letter to President Xi on behalf of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association and individuals from various sectors in Washington state. The letter expressed gratitude for Xi’s gift of table tennis equipment to the US youth, which sparked a surge in popularity for the sport among the city’s younger generation. Additionally, the signatories extended their well wishes for the success of the 31st FISU World University Games in Chengdu and the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou.

In his reply, President Xi emphasized the importance of people-to-people exchanges and expressed hope for closer ties and collaboration between the youth of both China and the US. Xi’s dedication to fostering communication and understanding between the two nations has garnered admiration from officials, entrepreneurs, students, and scholars.

Lynn Eisenhauer, the choir teacher from Lincoln High School, recalls how President Xi’s visit led to an invitation for 100 students to visit China as part of a friendship exchange. Eisenhauer has since accompanied students on trips to China, providing them with the opportunity to build friendships with people from all corners of the globe.

David Chong, the founder and president of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, highlights the importance of showcasing the numerous individuals dedicated to promoting US-China friendship, countering the negative portrayal of the relationship in some media outlets. He believes that portraying the two countries as rivals overlooks their shared history as allies during World War II.

Yuan Zheng, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, emphasizes the significance both China and the US place on communication and dialogue, particularly during strained periods. He asserts that China’s commitment towards maintaining strong bilateral relations with the US has never wavered.

Maurice Chong underscores the positive and pure nature of scientific exchanges among young people, emphasizing their shared academic interests and the potential to collectively advance humanity. He also highlights the vulnerability of young Americans to baseless media attacks and urges against demonizing subnational exchanges.

President Xi’s recent replies to letters from individuals in the US, including John Easterbrook, grandson of the late US Army General Joseph Stilwell, further underscore his commitment to fostering communication between the two peoples.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs views these replies as a demonstration of President Xi’s dedication to promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and the US. As exchanges between the two countries gradually resume after the pandemic, the ministry believes this aligns with the will of the people, the current global trend, and the fundamental interests of both nations.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of young Americans and Chinese individuals aim to enhance the upcoming 19th Asian Games through the application of artificial intelligence. This project not only showcases the potential of collaboration but also promotes friendship, strengthens ties, and fosters a deeper understanding between the youth of both nations.
