Top California High School Basketball Recruit Commits to University of Montana

MISSOULA — Tyler Thompson, a highly sought-after high school basketball recruit from California, has committed to the University of Montana. Thompson, who hails from a city in between Sacramento and San Francisco, had been on the Grizzlies’ radar since his freshman year. Although he didn’t receive an offer right away, Thompson always had his eye on Montana as a potential destination.

After growing into a four-star recruit, Thompson finally received a coveted offer from Montana in late June. Following an official visit to Missoula over the weekend, he announced his commitment to the Grizzlies as their first recruit in the Class of 2024. Thompson spoke highly of the coaching staff and the overall atmosphere at Montana, citing the love and support he received from everyone involved with the program.

Thompson had garnered interest from several other schools after an impressive performance at a recruiting showcase in Arizona. He received offers from West Coast Conference teams Pacific and San Diego, A-10 team Duquesne, and Big West team Cal State Northridge, among others. However, he ultimately narrowed his options down to Montana and San Diego before choosing the Grizzlies.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard, who ESPN ranks as the No. 16 recruit in California, described himself as a versatile player who excels both offensively and defensively. Thompson’s goal for his college career is to help lead Montana to conference championships and make an appearance in the NCAA tournament. He praised the community and the team spirit at Montana, stating that it felt like home to him.

Thompson, who attends Vanden High School in Fairfield, California, has already made a name for himself on the basketball court. Despite a knee injury that sidelined him for a few weeks, he was named to the MaxPreps All Sac-Joaquin Section boys basketball third team for the 2022-23 season. Thompson has also played for the Oakland Soldiers in AAU basketball.

With Thompson’s commitment, the University of Montana has secured a promising recruit who has the potential to make a significant impact on the team. Fans are excited to see how he will contribute to the Grizzlies’ success in the coming years.
