Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharanprakash Patil has announced plans to establish tertiary-level super-speciality hospitals in five different divisions of Karnataka, including Mysuru, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, and Ballari. These hospitals will be constructed to ensure people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds can access specialized healthcare services at little or no cost.
During his visit to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare that is affordable for all. Bengaluru already has a tertiary-level super-speciality hospital backed by the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), and the government hopes to replicate this success by constructing similar facilities in other prominent cities across the state.
Cardiac and trauma care centers will also be established in government hospitals across all divisional headquarters, making critical healthcare services more accessible to disadvantaged populations. However, the minister expressed some reservations about opening new government medical colleges in the remaining eight districts over the next five years due to existing financial commitments and the implementation of poll freebies.
The primary motivation behind the government’s previous initiative to establish medical colleges in each district was to expand medical education opportunities for underprivileged individuals and increase the availability of government-sponsored medical seats at minimal fees as opposed to the higher fees charged by private colleges. Establishing government medical colleges at district headquarters will also enhance the quality of healthcare services in affiliated government hospitals by ensuring that specialists can provide free treatment to disadvantaged populations.
The minister emphasized the need for discussions with the Chief Minister to assess the viability of establishing additional government medical colleges at this time. Providing quality healthcare services to all is a priority of the government, but financial constraints must be taken into account when planning future initiatives.
