Wisconsin Volleyball Secures Dramatic 5-Set Victory over Tennessee
In an exhilarating showdown, the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team emerged victorious against the No. 24 Tennessee Volunteers in a thrilling five-set match. The Wisconsin squad displayed their remarkable skill but also acknowledged that there is room for improvement in certain areas of their game.
Despite Wisconsin’s impressive hitting performance, with a hitting percentage of .306, they acknowledged their struggle in the serve and pass game, as Tennessee outperformed them in this aspect. However, despite this challenge, the Badgers managed to outscore their formidable opponents by over 100 points and secure the win.
The matchup took place at the UW Field House, with a passionate crowd of 7,229 spectators witnessing the intense battle. Wisconsin dominated the first two sets, winning 25-16 and 25-23 respectively. However, Tennessee fought back with determination, claiming victories in the third and fourth sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-20. The match came down to a nail-biting fifth set that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes, where the Badgers had to rally and secure four of the last five points to maintain their undefeated record.
Wisconsin’s key players showcased their exceptional skills throughout the match. Junior Sarah Franklin led the team in kills for the third consecutive match, delivering an impressive 23 kills with a .352 hitting percentage. Senior Devyn Robinson also made a significant impact with 15 kills and a .270 hitting percentage. Fifth-year senior setter Izzy Ashburn proved her versatility, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Carter Booth displayed great swing and blocking abilities, contributing eight kills, a .412 hitting percentage, and leading the team with eight blocks.
The decisive fifth set saw Wisconsin take an early lead with a 9-5 advantage. However, Tennessee staged a comeback and took a 12-11 lead. In the end, the Badgers showed immense resilience, clinching victory with a 15-13 scoreline. Franklin’s four kills and .333 hitting percentage in the final set played a crucial role in the team’s triumphant performance.
This win adds to Wisconsin’s impeccable record, as all their victories have come against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Notably, the Badgers have triumphed over four top 25 teams: No. 15 Baylor, No. 21 Arkansas (twice), and now Tennessee.
Head coach Kelly Sheffield expressed his admiration for the team’s mentality in high-pressure situations, stating, These sets are fun. It’s 15 points, it’s the end of the match. It’s go time. It’s either you go or you go home. It’s one of the two. We came out there in the fifth set and said this is what we live for.
