Seattle Man Fatally Shot by Officers in Longview After Attempted Escape

A tragic incident unfolded in Longview, Washington, as a Seattle man was shot and killed by officers after attempting to flee on Saturday. The Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team (LCMCT) provided details of the event in a news release issued on Sunday.

The incident began when paramedics responded to a report of a man passed out in a vehicle in the drive-thru line of Minami Teriyaki on 15th Street in Longview. Despite their efforts, the staff was unable to wake the man. Thankfully, medical staff administered Narcan, which revived him. However, the situation quickly took a turn for the worse when the man became aggressive, threatened the first responders, and drove away, displaying signs of impairment.

Officers from the Longview Police Department located the suspect’s vehicle, an orange Dodge Challenger, near 15th Avenue and Hudson Street. They attempted to stop the suspect by signaling in their marked patrol cars, but he failed to comply with their commands. Instead, he sped away, ran a red light, abruptly hit the brakes, and engaged in a reckless reverse maneuver.

The officers continued their pursuit, eventually cornering the suspect near 19th Avenue and Florida Street. However, the situation escalated when the suspect began firing multiple shots at one of the officers, striking a patrol vehicle. In response, three officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. Although the officers immediately administered first aid, the 30-year-old man, identified as Louis Earl Johnson Jr. of Seattle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Shockingly, investigators discovered that Johnson had illegally possessed a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, which was a ghost gun lacking a serial number. He had been carrying the firearm in a holster on his hip.

An independent investigation into the incident is being conducted by the LCMCT, comprising investigators from the Kelso Police Department, Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, and Castle Rock Police Department. This approach ensures a comprehensive and impartial assessment of the events leading to the tragic conclusion.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in maintaining public safety. It highlights the risks they encounter and the split-second decisions they must make in the face of danger.

The LCMCT’s investigation will undoubtedly shed more light on the circumstances surrounding this incident, providing answers to questions that have understandably arisen from this tragedy. The pursuit of the truth is crucial to maintaining transparency, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement agencies.

Efforts to address the issue of ghost guns, untraceable firearms without serial numbers, may also come to the forefront of discussions surrounding this incident. As authorities delve deeper into the matter, stakeholders may be prompted to explore strategies to prevent the illegal possession and use of such firearms.

As the investigation progresses, it is imperative to recognize the complexity and gravity of the situation. Balancing the need for swift action to protect lives with the pursuit of justice is a delicate task. Ultimately, the objective is to ensure the safety of both the public and law enforcement officers.

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Louis Earl Johnson Jr. during this difficult time. As the investigation unfolds, we hope that the truth will prevail, providing solace and closure to those affected by this tragic event.
