Three people were killed and several others were feared trapped after an illegal coal mine collapsed in Jharkhand’s Bhowra colliery area. The incident took place on June 9th at around 10:30 am. The exact number of people injured, trapped, or killed would be known once rescuers locate the victims, as per the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sindri, Abhishek Kumar. Coal mining is illegal in the region. Many local villagers were involved in the unauthorized mining activity when the mine collapsed. An eyewitness said that with the help of locals, three persons were taken out from the debris and declared dead by the hospital staff. The rescue operations are still underway, as per the Bhowra police station Inspector Binod Oraon. The general manager of BCCL’s Bhowra colliery, SS Das, who reached the spot, is monitoring the situation. It is not the first such incident in the region as earlier in February 2022, five people died in an abandoned mine of Eastern Coalfields in Gopinathpur area of Dhanbad.
