Mercedes Challenges Tesla’s Dominance with New Concept CLA EV
Mercedes-Benz has set its sights on Tesla’s market domination with the unveiling of its latest concept car, the CLA EV. The luxury German automaker showcased the electric vehicle at the Munich auto show, introducing a electric-first platform that will underpin future compact and midsize EVs.
The Concept CLA Class exhibits a drivetrain derived from Mercedes’ Vision EQXX concept, boasting impressive capabilities such as being able to travel from New York to Cincinnati on a single charge. Not only does the concept promise exceptional range, but it also features a highly aerodynamic design comparable to a football.
With Tesla’s recent surge in popularity impacting Mercedes’ sales, especially in terms of its lower-priced models, the German automaker is determined to regain its market share by directly targeting the EV market. Sam Fiorani, Vice President of AutoForecast Solutions, explains that releasing an electric CLA will allow Mercedes-Benz to compete head-to-head with Tesla, attracting younger, tech-focused consumers.
Recognizing the CLA’s potential, Mercedes dealers have highlighted that the model brings in 60 percent new buyers to the brand. The manufacturer plans to support four entry-level EVs, including a coupe, a shooting brake (wagon), and two crossovers, through its Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture.
Although the production version of the CLA EV won’t arrive in the United States until around mid-decade, dealers have already been given a glimpse of the vehicle. Described as larger than the combustion engine CLA with a sleeker profile, the EV aims to impress with an estimated range of over 466 miles based on European testing standards.
Mercedes has made significant advancements in the vehicle’s drivetrain technology, utilizing a 175-kilowatt electric motor coupled with a two-speed transmission. The brand’s in-house developed motor relies on fewer rare-earth metals, contributing to its sustainability. In terms of energy consumption, the Concept CLA achieves approximately 5.2 miles per kilowatt-hour, making it comparable to the most fuel-efficient internal combustion vehicles on the market.
Additionally, the Concept CLA features an 800-volt electric system that allows for a boost of up to 248 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Mercedes also introduces its bespoke operating system, MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System), which enhances key areas such as infotainment, automated driving, body and comfort, and powertrain systems.
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz, emphasizes that the brand takes pride in being the system’s architects. Combining in-house software development with technology collaborations, Mercedes-Benz aims to provide a seamless user experience. For instance, the company plans to develop a branded navigation system using in-car data and navigation capabilities from the Google Maps Platform to enhance the vehicle’s infotainment offerings.
In terms of design, the Concept CLA showcases a sleek and modern appearance characterized by its shark-nose front end, flared wheel arches, and a wide track. While reflective chrome light bands accentuate the vehicle’s exterior when not illuminated, the interior of the concept car represents a perfect blend of technology and elegance. Mercedes achieves this by incorporating organic materials such as hemp and leather alongside high-gloss surfaces. Sustainable elements are also present, with bamboo fiber used for the floor mats and recycled polyester upholstery for the console.
As Mercedes-Benz aligns its strategy with electric mobility, it aims to stand toe-to-toe with industry giant Tesla. By introducing the Concept CLA EV and other future electric models, the German automaker plans to attract a new generation of customers and reaffirm its position in the luxury EV market.
