Drunk Driver Mistakenly Reports Himself to 911 After Confusing Another Driver on Nebraska Highway

In a bizarre turn of events, an intoxicated driver in Nebraska unintentionally alerted authorities after mistakenly reporting another driver for allegedly going the wrong way on a highway. The Lancaster Sheriff’s Office recently released body camera footage of the incident, which took place back in March.

The video, made public on Thursday, includes audio of the drunk driver calling 911 to report that somebody’s on the wrong side of Highway 77. In the recording, the driver can be heard expressing concern that the other car was driving with its bright lights on and almost caused him to veer off the road.

Eager to address the situation, a deputy from the sheriff’s office promptly set off in pursuit of the reported wrong-way driver. However, to their surprise, it was the very same individual who had made the 911 call. The footage shows the deputy pulling over the intoxicated driver, who admitted his mistake, saying, Yeah, because I was on the wrong side of the road. I must’ve missed an exit.

It was later revealed that the blood-alcohol content of the driver who made the call was more than twice the legal limit. Consequently, he was promptly arrested by the authorities. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this incident.

The Lancaster Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of vigilance against impaired driving, particularly as it remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and fatalities. As part of the nationwide Drive sober or get pulled over campaign, additional deputies have been deployed to patrol the roads during the Labor Day weekend.

Captain John A. Vik from the sheriff’s office expressed gratitude towards members of the public who report impaired drivers and urged others to do the same. He highlighted the value of videos like the one released, which shed light on the dangers of impaired driving. The sheriff’s office hopes that by raising awareness, such incidents can be avoided, preventing serious harm to road users.

With this incident serving as a reminder of the risks associated with drunk driving, it is crucial for all drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. By choosing not to drive while under the influence of alcohol or other substances, lives can be saved and accidents prevented. As we approach the Labor Day weekend, let us all remember the importance of responsible and sober driving to ensure the well-being of ourselves and others sharing the roads.
