A Seizure Worth Rs. 6.5 Crores – The Battle Against Illicit Cigarette Trade Intensifies in India
In a significant development, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Ahmedabad has taken action against a container laden with foreign-origin cigarettes at Mundra Port. The consignment, initially declared as “Auto Air Fresheners,” was halted by DRI officials for a closer inspection.
Upon careful examination, officials discovered that the first row of packages in the container indeed contained “Auto Air Fresheners.” However, behind these innocuous-looking items lay a different reality. Inside the majority of the packages were foreign-made cigarettes bearing the label “Gold Flakes,” with a significant number of them proudly stating “Made in Turkey.” Under Panchanama proceedings, a total of 32.5 lakhs of these cigarette sticks were confiscated, with an estimated value of a staggering Rs. 6.5 crores.
