Elderly Woman’s Wallet Stolen at Whole Foods, Credit Cards Used for $1,750 Shopping Spree, Orange Police Blotter
An 84-year-old woman had her wallet stolen while shopping at Whole Foods, leading to unauthorized credit card charges totaling $1,750. The incident occurred on August 25 when the woman placed her purse on the top rack of her grocery cart. Upon reaching the checkout, she discovered that her wallet, which had $150 cash and various credit cards, was missing.
She later received email alerts from her bank notifying her of unauthorized transactions. Someone had used her cards at Beachwood Rite-Aid to make purchases of $414, $421, and $913. An attempt to spend $420 at Heinen’s grocery was declined.
The victim believes her wallet was stolen while she was distracted by a woman who engaged her in conversation about mustard and then asked for assistance in finding canned salmon. The thief took advantage of the distraction to steal the wallet.
Authorities have gathered more information about the suspects as the investigation progresses. The assistant manager at Rite-Aid recalled two women who made unlawful purchases totaling around $1,750. Due to the victim’s status as an elderly protected person, the theft charge is considered a fourth-degree felony.
Another theft incident occurred at Whole Foods on August 26. A 22-year-old woman reported that her car had been broken into while parked in the north lot. The thief stole a luggage bag worth approximately $2,000, containing clothing, shoes, makeup, and other items.
Security footage revealed a man lingering in the parking lot, checking the trunk of a nearby car. The thief managed to open the locked car by using the partially open rear driver’s side window and grabbed the bag. The perpetrators fled in a black Chevy Impala.
Both incidents highlight the importance of remaining vigilant while shopping and securing personal belongings to prevent theft. It is advised to keep purses and bags close at all times and never leave them unattended. Additionally, it’s crucial to be aware of potential distractions used by thieves.
Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating both cases and encourage anyone with information to come forward. The community is urged to report any suspicious activities and look out for one another to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhoods.
