India Strives to Achieve UN Health Goals Despite Challenges: IIPH Expert
India faces numerous gaps and challenges in achieving SDG3 targets, which aim to ensure good health and well-being for all, according to R Madhubala, an expert from the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH). Speaking at the 28th AP State Joint Conference of IPHA and IAPSM hosted by the GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR), Madhubala emphasized the importance of accelerating action towards SDG3 by strengthening health systems, increasing health financing, and enhancing the health workforce.
M Sribharath, the president of GITAM, stressed the need for improved healthcare services in India to reduce out-of-pocket expenses. He also highlighted the importance of preventive care, raising the standards of primary healthcare centers, and upskilling healthcare professionals to build a resilient healthcare system for the future.
Professor Sanjay K.Rai from AIIMS (New Delhi) Center for Community Medicine delivered the Dr. B.Ram Murthy Memorial Oration on pandemic preparedness lessons learnt from Covid-19. He discussed the progress of Covid-19 vaccines, explaining that while many are in development, only 37 have been approved for usage. He also highlighted recent evidence suggesting that individuals who have recovered from Covid-19 may have a lower chance of reinfection compared to the vaccinated population.
The event concluded with the release of a souvenir. Various notable figures, including Vice-Chancellor Dayananda Siddavattam, Pro Vice-Chancellor B. Geetanjali, and GIMSR Dean SP Rao, participated in the program.
India’s commitment to achieving the UN’s sustainable development goals in the field of healthcare remains strong despite the challenges the country faces. Implementing effective strategies to strengthen health systems, increase funding, and enhance the health workforce will be crucial in ensuring the well-being of all citizens.
