British Columbia is facing an ongoing drug crisis that has reached alarming levels. According to the BC Coroners Service, the province has recorded a record number of deaths, with 1,455 reported in the first seven months of 2023. The crisis is fueled by a toxic and unregulated drug supply that continues to put lives at risk.

Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe expressed sadness at the situation, stating that despite recommendations for urgent action and the expansion of a safer drug supply, very few people have access to a stable and lower-risk alternative. The unregulated illicit market remains highly unpredictable, leading to thousands of deaths each month.

The death toll from toxic drugs in British Columbia is extremely concerning. Between January and July 2023, 1,455 deaths were attributed to toxic drugs, marking the highest number ever reported for the first seven months of the year. The death rate stands at 46.2 per 100,000 residents, with the Vancouver Coastal, Island, and Interior health authorities witnessing higher death rates than ever before. The Northern Health Authority has the highest death rate in the province.

Although urban centers like Vancouver, Surrey, and Greater Victoria have seen the highest number of deaths, other regions have also been significantly affected. Central Vancouver Island, Northern Interior, Northwest, and Greater Nanaimo have experienced a severe risk of injury or death for drug users.

Unregulated drug toxicity is now the leading cause of death in British Columbia for individuals aged 10 to 59, surpassing homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural diseases combined. Since the declaration of the public health emergency in April 2016, at least 12,739 lives have been lost to unregulated drugs.

As International Overdose Awareness Day approaches, Lisa Lapointe emphasizes the need for urgent action to prevent further loss of life. She calls on decision-makers to take immediate steps to address the critical risks posed by the ongoing drug crisis. Six lives are lost every day, and this tragedy demands a swift and effective response.

While there has been a slight decrease in suspected unregulated drug deaths from July 2022 to July 2023, there is still a 4% increase from June 2023. The Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health Authorities have recorded the highest number of unregulated drug deaths in 2023, accounting for 56% of all such deaths.

The devastating impact of the drug crisis in British Columbia cannot be ignored. Urgent action is necessary, and decision-makers must prioritize addressing this public health emergency to prevent further loss of life. Expanding access to a safer drug supply and regulating the illicit drug market are crucial steps towards saving lives and helping those affected by the ongoing crisis.
