Mayfield High School’s Explosive Backfield and Stingy Defense Lead to Victory
Mayfield High School’s football team showcased their explosive backfield and stingy defense as they secured their first win of the season. Led by quarterback Luke Linnan and running back Anthony Nevarez, the Trojans dominated the game, defeating Organ Mountain with a resounding score of 40-10.
The Trojans’ defense was particularly impressive, holding Organ Mountain to just 130 yards throughout the game. They forced two turnovers and sacked the opposing quarterbacks an impressive seven times. Mayfield’s defense proved to be a formidable force that Organ Mountain struggled to break through.
Offensively, Mayfield’s backfield duo of Linnan and Nevarez took charge, leading their team to victory. Linnan showcased his versatility with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown, combined with 109 passing yards and another touchdown. Nevarez, on the other hand, delivered an exceptional performance, rushing for 84 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Their combined efforts proved unstoppable for the Organ Mountain defense.
From the very beginning of the game, Mayfield displayed their dominance. They outgained Organ Mountain with a staggering 241 yards to 59 in the first half alone. By halftime, Mayfield held a commanding lead of 27-3, leaving Organ Mountain struggling to catch up.
One of Mayfield’s standout moments occurred in the closing moments of the first half. They drove the ball 60 yards, culminating in a four-yard touchdown pass from Linnan to Brian Coyle on a decisive fourth down. This play highlighted the Trojans’ determination to maintain their momentum and finish each opportunity with a positive outcome.
Mayfield’s rushing game was a major factor in their success. They rushed for a total of 185 yards in the first half and an impressive 318 rushing yards throughout the entire game. Their ability to consistently gain yards on the ground put them in a favorable position and allowed them to control the tempo of the game.
While Mayfield showcased their prowess on both sides of the ball, it’s worth noting that Organ Mountain’s EJ Guerra had a commendable performance. Guerra rushed for 108 yards and managed to score a touchdown for the Knights in the second half. Despite their efforts, however, Organ Mountain couldn’t overcome Mayfield’s dominant performance.
With this victory, Mayfield improved their season record to 2-0. Their next challenge awaits them in a game against Centennial, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday. On the other hand, the Knights of Organ Mountain fell to a disappointing 0-3 record. They will have an opportunity to bounce back when they host Rio Rancho at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Mayfield’s commanding performance against Organ Mountain has certainly established them as a team to watch out for in the high school football scene. With their explosive backfield and stingy defense, the Trojans are proving to be formidable opponents for any team they face.
