Man Charged with Murder of Dublin Prisoner Dies Days After Injury
A man has been charged with the murder of a prisoner who sadly passed away just days after suffering a severe head injury in Mountjoy jail, Dublin. The suspect, David Dunne, 34, from Swords, Dublin, was arrested on Friday in connection with the killing of 34-year-old Robert O’Connor from Darndale, north Dublin.
The incident occurred on July 29, 2022, when Mr. O’Connor was rushed to the Mater Hospital. He spent three days on a ventilator before being pronounced dead. It is worth noting that he had been sentenced to six and a half years for possession of a semi-automatic pistol in Finglas just two days prior to sustaining the injuries.
Appearing in Dublin District Court, Mr. Dunne, dressed in a grey tracksuit, remained silent and sat with his arms folded throughout the hearing. He was not required to enter a plea at this stage.
As the District Court does not have jurisdiction over murder cases, Mr. Dunne was remanded in custody until his next court appearance at Cloverhill District Court on September 8th, where he will appear via video link. A return for trial order cannot be granted until the Director of Public Prosecutions completes a book of evidence and serves it on the accused.
During the court proceedings, Mr. Dunne applied for free legal aid, stating that he has no income or assets. The court approved his request without any objections from the police.
