Mississippi Deputies Under Investigation After Fatally Shooting Man During Arrest Attempt in Southaven
Authorities are investigating a shooting incident involving Mississippi sheriff’s deputies that resulted in the death of a man during an attempted arrest in Southaven. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to look into the incident that occurred early Wednesday.
According to officials, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was executing an arrest when the individual reportedly pointed a weapon at the deputies. In response, the deputies opened fire, fatally shooting the man. Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Demarcus Williams, a 34-year-old resident of Southaven. The DeSoto County Chief Deputy, Justin Smith, revealed that the SWAT team was serving a federal search warrant on behalf of the Drug Enforcement Administration when they arrived at Williams’ home.
Smith explained that the deputies first knocked on the door and provided ample time for occupants to respond. However, Williams did not answer the door and ignored the deputies’ attempts to make contact with him. Eventually, deputies made contact with Williams through a window and repeatedly instructed him to show his hands and surrender. Despite their efforts, Williams refused to comply and instead produced a rifle, pointing it at a deputy. In self-defense, the deputy fired shots, fatally striking Williams in the chest. Immediate medical assistance was administered, but unfortunately, Williams succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Chief Deputy Smith also disclosed that Williams had an extensive criminal record, including charges of murder, assault, aggravated robbery, multiple drug offenses, and gun charges. He emphasized the importance of compliance in order to avoid tragic outcomes like this, particularly in a world where law enforcement faces increasing violence and threats.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now gathering evidence as part of their investigation, which will later be handed over to the Attorney General’s Office for review.
