Convicted Murderer Alex Murdaugh Loses Phone Privileges and Tablet in Prison Breach
Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has had his phone privileges and tablet computer revoked as a result of a prison breach, according to officials from the South Carolina Corrections Department. Murdaugh’s lawyer recorded him reading his journal entries during a phone call for a documentary about his case, which violated the prison’s policy against inmates speaking to the media without permission.
The state prisons spokeswoman, Chrysti Shain, stated that the agency implemented this policy to protect the victims of crime, as they should not have to see or hear the person who victimized them or their family members in the news. Shain clarified that the violations Murdaugh committed are disciplinary issues within the prison, rather than criminal offenses.
As a consequence of his actions, Murdaugh will also be unable to make purchases from the prison canteen for a month. He will have to obtain permission from prison officials to acquire another tablet in the future, which can be utilized for monitored phone calls, approved entertainment, reading material, and video classes, as stated by Shain.
Currently serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of his wife and younger son, Murdaugh’s lawyer, Jim Griffin, recorded him reading journal entries during his double murder trial for an upcoming documentary. Griffin has received a note from prison officials cautioning that if he assists Murdaugh in violating the rules again, he may lose his ability to communicate with his client.
During their investigation, prison officials discovered Murdaugh’s voice on a call made using a different inmate’s account, prompting further inquiries. Murdaugh explained that his phone password was not functioning and informed prison investigators about the recorded journal entries.
In September, Murdaugh is scheduled to plead guilty to federal charges of embezzling millions from clients. This will be the first time he confesses to a crime in court. Additionally, he faces approximately 100 charges in state court, including stealing funds from clients who suffered debilitating injuries and needed financial assistance for medical care. Authorities have accused him of pilfering from his family’s law firm and participating in a drug ring to launder money. Furthermore, they allege that he arranged for a friend to attempt his murder on a desolate highway, with the intention of securing a $10 million life insurance payout for his son, although the attempt only resulted in a minor injury.
