Rams Coach Not Concerned About Matthew Stafford‘s Connection with Young Teammates

The Los Angeles Rams’ head coach, Sean McVay, recently dismissed concerns over quarterback Matthew Stafford’s ability to connect with his younger teammates. McVay responded to comments made by Stafford’s wife, Kelly, on her podcast, stating that Stafford was having difficulty bonding with the team’s younger players.

McVay, however, downplayed these concerns, stating that he took Kelly’s remarks as more of a joke. He even jokingly mentioned that there were a couple of throws made by Stafford during training camp that made him want to say, Yes sir, to him as well. The coach further emphasized that Stafford has been doing a great job of leading and connecting with his teammates.

Describing Stafford as emotionally intelligent and authentically good, McVay commended his ability to connect both on a personal level and on the football field. The coach added that Stafford has earned reverence and respect from his teammates due to his experience and performance in the league.

Addressing the team’s major roster turnover since their Super Bowl victory in 2022, McVay highlighted the Rams’ 14 selections in the 2023 NFL Draft. With a young roster, Stafford has been making efforts to get to know his teammates better, even going as far as printing out a book with their faces and names.

Kelly Stafford’s initial comments highlighted the changing dynamics of NFL locker rooms, where players now tend to spend more time on their phones than interacting with each other. Stafford was reportedly struggling to be seen as an equal by his younger teammates and was eager to build connections with them.

Despite these challenges, McVay expressed confidence in Stafford’s ability to navigate the situation. The Rams’ coach emphasized that Stafford’s leadership and connection with his teammates were not a concern for him. He dismissed the idea that Stafford was not enjoying or connecting with his younger teammates, stating that anyone observing the team closely would see otherwise.

As the Rams prepare for the upcoming season, McVay’s support for Stafford’s rapport-building efforts reinforces the team’s cohesion and strengthens their prospects on the field. The Rams will kick off their 2023 season against the Seattle Seahawks on September 10.
