Registrations are now open for the annual Jesse James Festival in Kearney, offering a range of fun-filled events for attendees. The festival will take place on September 8 and 9, as well as on September 15 through 17. Those interested in participating are encouraged to register in advance to secure their spot.
One of the main highlights of the festival is the parade, which will feature a traditional fall theme this year. Entries for the parade are being accepted until Thursday, August 31. Judged categories include floats, nonmotorized vehicles, motorized vehicles, equestrian entries, and a crowd pleaser category. Winners will receive ribbons or plaques, with the ultimate prize being the traveling trophy for the year. The parade will take place on Saturday, September 16, at 10 a.m. and will wind its way through downtown Kearney.
For those looking to participate in running events, the Bill James Classic 5/10K races are the perfect opportunity. Runners can register online for the races, which will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, at Jesse James Park. Early registration discounts are available for those who sign up before midnight on Tuesday, September 5. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers, as well as in various age categories. The races are open to participants of all abilities, including those with strollers and walkers.
Arts & Crafts Alley is another popular attraction during the festival’s second weekend. Vendors who wish to sell their goods can register until September 13. Booth hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, in the park. Vendors must be present on both days to participate.
Barbecue enthusiasts won’t want to miss the 35th Annual Jesse James Barbeque Cook-Out, which is also the 33rd Annual Show-Me State Championship. This BBQ contest will take place during the festival from September 15 through 17. The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and judging will be done according to their procedures. Categories include beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken, and pork shoulder/Boston butt. Additional categories for this year include fresh brats and pork chops. Only the four main categories will count towards the reserve and grand champion titles. Participants will have the chance to win thousands of dollars in prize money.
The festival also offers a Little Mr. and Miss contest for children between the ages of 1 and 7. Families can sign up their little ones until Saturday, September 9. The contest will take place on Saturday, September 16, at 8:15 a.m. at Kearney Feed Store. First and second place will be awarded in each gender and age category, and all participants will receive a little something for competing.
After a break of several years, mud volleyball is making a comeback at the Jesse James Festival. Co-ed teams can register until September 9 to participate. Games will be held on Saturday, September 16, at 1 p.m. in Jesse James Park. Teams must consist of a minimum of six players and a maximum of nine, with at least two men and two women on each team.
