Chaotic Conclusion to Manipur Legislative Assembly as Ethnic Violence Halts Business
The Manipur Legislative Assembly’s fourth session concluded in chaos after a one-day sitting, bringing no substantial progress due to the absence of 10 MLAs from the Kuki community. This session marked the first gathering since ethnic violence erupted nearly four months ago. Pressure groups, including the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), had urged the Assembly to address the issue of the state’s integrity. However, no concrete resolution was reached. COCOMI expressed their dissatisfaction anonymously, stating that the resolutions failed to uphold the integrity of Manipur. Although the Assembly resolved to work towards unity and harmony, territorial integrity was noticeably absent from their discussions.
MLA Haokholet Kipgen of Saitu constituency in Kangpokpi district commented that convening the Assembly was simply a desperate attempt to save the government, compelled by constitutional obligations. He described the resolutions as vague. It should be noted that the 10 MLAs from the Kuki community had previously announced their decision not to attend the session. They stood firm in their demand for a separate administration for Kuki-dominated areas within the framework of the Constitution.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) deemed the one-day session as a superficial exercise with no substantial outcome.
The outskirts of Imphal and Loktak Valley have been witnessing tension since Monday night, with sporadic incidents of firing being reported. However, authorities assure that the overall law and order situation in the state remains under control.
