Eagles Receiver A.J. Brown Addresses Controversy Over DeVonta Smith Comparison, Calls for Fan Unity

In a recent interview, Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown addressed the controversy surrounding a comparison between him and his teammate DeVonta Smith. Cornerback Darius Slay had previously praised Smith, suggesting that he could become the best receiver in the league. Brown, however, did not fully endorse these comments, emphasizing that he sees himself as a top receiver as well.

Brown clarified that he believes Slay was simply supporting his teammate and acknowledging Smith’s talent. He expressed excitement for the upcoming season and called for fan unity instead of pitting him against Smith. Brown wishes that fans would appreciate both of their abilities instead of choosing between them.

While Brown’s comments might be interpreted as a diva-like attempt to create division or show dissatisfaction with his standing on the team, it is more likely that he is using this as motivation to improve. Brown has been working on his speed and overall game during the offseason, driven by his desire to be the best.

When asked about fans picking between Team AJ and Team DeVonta, Brown urged against such comparisons. He emphasized that they work well together, complementing each other’s strengths. Their conversations revolve around improving their route running and other aspects of the game, and their support for each other drives them to be better.

Last season, Brown set a franchise record with 1,496 receiving yards, while Smith had an impressive rookie season with 1,196 yards, making them the first receiving duo in Eagles history to surpass 1,000 yards each. The Eagles’ offense has room for both receivers, along with tight end Dallas Goedert. Brown is aware of this, as is Slay.

Slay, in fact, also praised Brown, acknowledging that he is an elite receiver. He commended Brown’s leadership and how he pushes Smith to improve. Slay believes that both receivers have the potential to be among the best in the league.

At only 26 years old, Brown feels he is continuing to grow and improve. He is focused on staying at the elite level for as long as possible.

In other Eagles news, edge rusher Haason Reddick underwent thumb surgery three weeks ago but expects to be ready for the season opener on September 10. Reddick, who recorded 16 sacks last season, returned to practice this week with some protective equipment.

Additionally, the Eagles signed cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, but he is currently serving a season-long suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Rodgers will not be able to play for the team until 2024.

Overall, the Eagles are looking forward to a promising season with talented receivers like Brown and Smith, who continue to support and motivate each other. Their chemistry and dedication to improving their craft will undoubtedly benefit the team as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
