Elderly Woman Injured as Beach Umbrella Impales Leg in Unprecedented Incident
An elderly woman in Orange Beach, Alabama, was rushed to the hospital on Monday after a beach umbrella was propelled by a strong gust of wind, piercing her leg in a shocking turn of events. The incident took place outside the Phoenix II Condominiums, leaving officials bewildered as they had never encountered such a situation before.
Deputy Chief Jeff Smith of the city’s fire department reported that although the woman is doing fine, the unique nature of the incident required careful handling. Since impaled objects are not removed by the department, they had to cut both ends of the rod off, stabilize her, and subsequently let the doctors take over. Unfortunately, there is limited information about the woman aside from her being elderly.
According to Smith, Orange Beach Fire & Rescue swiftly responded to the incident on Perdido Beach around 9 a.m. He speculated that a gust of wind from a storm most likely caused a rental umbrella to be swept along the beach, ultimately piercing the woman’s leg. With hurricane season in full swing, Smith stressed the importance of beachgoers dismantling their private tents and umbrellas to prevent them from being lifted by strong winds.
Even with the services down there doing their best to remove them when bad weather approaches, sudden storms and gusts of wind can pose risks, Smith explained. He added, In the past, we’ve witnessed injuries related to umbrellas, although this incident is unprecedented in severity.
Smith implored all beach visitors to exercise caution and take down their umbrellas in the face of inclement weather. By being proactive and aware, individuals can avoid potential accidents and ensure their safety.
