In a tragic incident that has shocked the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a fatal shooting took place in a science building, leaving the entire campus community in a state of distress. Katz noted that while panic seemed to be relatively subdued, the experience was far from normal and raised concerns about whether his home university might recall exchange students prematurely. However, Katz remained optimistic and expressed his fondness for the Chapel Hill campus, stating that he currently still felt safe.
During a news conference, Chancellor Guskiewicz addressed the concerns of students who were feeling uncertain about their safety. Meanwhile, UNC Police Chief Brian James revealed that it was unclear whether the suspect knew the victim and emphasized that the weapon used in the shooting had not yet been found. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the firearm was legally obtained.
The university, having recently begun the new academic term a week prior to the incident, made the decision to cancel Tuesday’s classes due to the tragedy. Consequently, the nearby Chapel Hill-Carrboro City district also temporarily locked down its schools as a precautionary measure.
