New National Electoral Council Established in Venezuela Amidst Heightened Political Mobilization

Venezuela witnessed the installation of a new National Electoral Council (CNE) last week, marking a significant development in the country’s political landscape. The CNE is responsible for overseeing electoral processes and ensuring their fairness. The council is comprised of various individuals in key positions, including Elvis Amoroso as the president of the CNE and Carlos Quintero as the vice president.

During the installation session, the CNE made important decisions regarding upcoming elections. The agenda includes the presidential election in 2024, as well as elections for governors, mayors, and parliamentarians in 2025. These highly anticipated elections have garnered attention from both the ruling Chavismo party and the opposition.

While the opposition plans to hold its own primary in October, Chavismo has mobilized its supporters across the country in demonstrations supporting President Nicolás Maduro and rejecting the opposition’s plans for violence, as well as the sanctions imposed on Venezuela. With the CNE now in place, the stage is set for an intensifying political season in the country.

Meanwhile, in Caracas, a severe rainstorm caused significant damage in various areas of the city. The heavy downpour resulted in the toppling of at least 27 trees and affected neighborhoods such as El Paraíso, Santa Rosalía, and San Martín. The Mayor’s Office of Caracas promptly mobilized efforts to assist affected families, providing assistance in the form of home appliances and other necessities.

In other news, the sudden death of former governor Luis Acuña of Sucre shocked the nation. Acuña had been serving as the business manager of the Venezuelan Embassy in Canada. President Maduro expressed his condolences on the X network.

The Central Bank of Venezuela also reported the exchange rate of 32.34 bolivars per dollar, which is the current valid rate for all transactions in the country.

Turning to international news, the results of the investigation into the plane crash in Russia were released. Through molecular genetic tests, it was confirmed that Yevgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin, leaders of the dismantled Wagner Group, were among those killed in the tragic incident.

Shifting focus to sports, Venezuelan athlete Yulimar Rojas achieved a dramatic victory at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Overcoming several invalid jumps and failing to meet her usual performance, Rojas managed to secure the title with a jump of 15.08 meters on her sixth attempt. This remarkable achievement adds to her already impressive track record, which includes multiple world titles and Olympic medals.

Unfortunately, a recent scandal involving the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, has overshadowed the triumph of the Spanish women’s soccer team in the World Cup. Rubiales was accused of forcibly kissing team captain Jenni Hermoso, sparking widespread criticism. While Rubiales claimed the kiss was consensual, Hermoso and her union denied the allegation. Following public outrage and support from fellow teammates, the Spanish government has initiated the process to dismiss Rubiales from the federation, and FIFA has suspended him for 90 days.

In domestic women’s soccer, Caracas FC emerged as the champions of the Women’s FUTVEN League 2023.

Lastly, a recent survey conducted in Venezuela explored the popularity of avocados among the population. The results indicated that an overwhelming 97.5% of participants consume avocados, shedding light on the widespread love for this fruit in the country.

As Monday begins, Venezuelans eagerly await further news updates. To stay informed throughout the day, connecting with sources such as latestnews.com.ve and @UNews is highly recommended.
