Four members of a Dalit family, including two minors and a former village head, were allegedly beaten by a group of upper caste men for bathing at a tubewell reservoir in the Khurja city of Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place on Thursday when the upper caste men arrived at the reservoir and threatened the Dalit family not to bathe near them. When the family protested, more men arrived and thrashed them with sticks.
Malkhan Singh, the former village head, said that around five to seven members of his family were injured in the attack. An FIR has been registered against 10 accused persons under various sections of the IPC and the SC/ST Act. However, no arrests have been made so far.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the ongoing discrimination faced by Dalits in India. It is not an isolated incident, as such violence against Dalits occurs frequently in many parts of the country. The government must take necessary action to prevent such incidents and protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their caste or religion.
