Indian scientists at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) have developed a self-test kit that detects haemoglobin levels in patients in just 30 seconds. The product, called SenzHb, is a colourimetric paper-based strip that detects anaemia and will cost just Rs 10 ($0.14) per test. Currently, rural communities and remote areas of India may struggle to gain basic medical assistance while traditional haemoglobin level checking is only available in clinical lab settings. With this kit, users simply prick a finger and drop blood onto the strip before matching the resulting colour to an accompanying guide to determine an anaemia result. The SenzHb product has incorporated a QR code with eight languages and colour charts to aid non-healthcare professionals in interpreting the results. It is hoped to be available across India soon.
