Samoa’s Jireh Tamapua Overcomes Challenges and Graduates with Accounting Degree

Jireh Maluina Tamapua, a native of Samoa, has recently achieved a significant milestone in his academic journey by graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Otago University. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, Tamapua’s strong faith in God and unwavering perseverance guided him to success.

As the eldest son and third child of Lenata’i Victor and Arlene Tamapua, Jireh firmly believes in the power of hard work and trusting in the Lord to navigate through life’s trials. Hailing from the villages of Moata’a, Vaivase-Tai, and Saleimoa in Upolu, Jireh’s graduation was a joyous occasion attended by his parents and beloved sister Sarah Tamapua. However, there were two notable absences that he deeply felt on this momentous day.

Jireh’s prayer warriors and grandmothers, the late Elisapeta Rimoni Palu and Fouai Alualu Tamapua, held a special place in his heart. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closure of international borders, Jireh was unable to be with them during their final moments. His paternal grandmother, affectionately known as Mama Fouai, was a pillar of strength for their family.

Throughout his academic journey, Jireh encountered turbulence and challenges that tested his resilience. Being away from home meant adapting to a new environment, establishing new friendships, and embracing diversity. Jireh also underwent eye surgery and experienced the heartache of losing his beloved grandmother. However, he drew strength from his faith, knowing that God would never abandon him.

Jireh shared, With so many challenges, I managed to conquer it with Papa God never leaving nor forsaking me. This milestone came with many challenges—COVID-19, my eye surgery, especially with the death of my prayer warrior grandma, Fouai Alualu Tamapua last year, and could not come home due to border closures. What kept me going in the midst of the challenges is God and the promises that he has for us.

Quoting Philippians 1:6, Jireh found solace in the scripture that reminded him that if God initiated this journey, He would bring it to completion. And indeed, He did.

Looking ahead, Jireh is currently working as a part-time lecturer and course coordinator for foundation accounting—an exciting role that aligns with his passion for teaching and facilitating students’ learning. However, his aspirations extend beyond his current position. Jireh is eager to serve Samoa in whatever capacity God has planned for him, whether it be pursuing further studies or assisting his mother in her business.

Jireh’s story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and trusting in a higher power. Despite the obstacles he faced, he remained steadfast in his belief that if given an opportunity, it is God’s calling to carry you through. With unwavering determination, Jireh emerged triumphant, equipped with an accounting degree and a bright future ahead.

As Jireh embarks on the next chapter of his life, we celebrate his accomplishments and wish him success in all his endeavors. Through his story, we are reminded that with faith, hard work, and reliance on a higher power, we can overcome any challenges that come our way.
