Zoo Knoxville Celebrates 75th Anniversary, Encourages Community to Share Memories

Zoo Knoxville, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its 75th anniversary. To commemorate this achievement, the zoo is inviting the community to share their cherished memories and stories from their visits to the zoo. The shared memories will be showcased on the zoo’s website and social media platforms. Additionally, one lucky participant will have the chance to win a VIP behind-the-scenes experience with the zoo’s adorable red pandas.

Lisa New, President and CEO of Zoo Knoxville, expressed her excitement about the community’s involvement in the anniversary celebration. She emphasized the integral role the community has played in the zoo’s success throughout the years. Knoxville and East Tennessee have continuously supported and embraced the zoo, considering it an essential part of their vibrant and thriving community.

The zoo’s journey began in 1948 with the arrival of its first major attraction, Al the alligator. Over the years, the community rallied together to create memorable experiences and ensure the zoo’s growth. In 1963, Old Diamond, an African elephant left behind by the Ringling Brothers Circus, found a new home at Zoo Knoxville thanks to the community’s efforts in building him a barn. In 1970, Guy Smith took on the role of acting director and prevented the zoo from facing closure. Under the leadership of directors Ted Beaty, Patrick Roddy, and Jim Vina in subsequent decades, Zoo Knoxville witnessed remarkable growth and transformation.

New acknowledged that Zoo Knoxville’s triumphs were a result of the unwavering support received from Knoxville and East Tennessee. She emphasized the importance of celebrating the 75th anniversary by including the cherished moments and memories of the zoo’s guests over the years. The sense of pride and ownership within the community is well-deserved, as their support has helped establish Zoo Knoxville as a world-class facility.

To participate in the anniversary celebration, community members are encouraged to share their personal stories, photos, and memories on the zoo’s dedicated website, zooknox75.com, or on social media using the hashtags #ZooKnox and #Zoo75. The submission period will begin on August 28 and run until September 1. The winner of the VIP behind-the-scenes experience will be announced on September 4, 2023.

Zoo Knoxville has achieved notable milestones since its founding, such as becoming an accredited member of the National Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Additionally, the zoo takes pride in being the birthplace of numerous red pandas, surpassing all other zoos worldwide in their successful breeding efforts.

Looking ahead, New expressed her excitement about the future of Zoo Knoxville. Despite its long-established history, the zoo continues to have many exciting plans and ventures in store.

As Zoo Knoxville celebrates 75 years of delivering unforgettable experiences and creating lasting memories, the community’s participation and support remain invaluable. The zoo’s success story is a testament to the dedication and love it has received from Knoxville and East Tennessee. Through the continued support and shared memories, Zoo Knoxville aims to maintain its status as a world-class destination while providing enriching experiences for visitors of all ages.
