Kharkiv Pride Shines Light on Lack of Marriage Equality in Ukraine with Symbolic Wedding Ceremony
KharkivPride, a prominent LGBTQ+ event, is drawing attention to the absence of marriage equality in Ukraine through a symbolic wedding ceremony. The event, which runs from August 23 to September 2, included the wedding of soldier Alina Shevchenko and human rights activist Stanislava Petlytsia.
Unfortunately, Alina and Stanislava are unable to formalize their relationship due to the lack of marriage equality in Ukraine. To address this issue, the enactment of draft law No. 9103 on registered civil partnerships could provide a partial solution.
As part of KharkivPride, a performance in the form of a genuine wedding ceremony was organized to raise awareness about the lack of marriage equality. The participants of the performance were a real couple who recently got engaged.
Alina Shevchenko is a respected military officer from the Kharkiv region, serving as a captain and brigade staff officer. She has been in military service since 2015 and her team is aware of her sexual orientation and engagement to her partner.
Stanislava Petlytsia, on the other hand, is a dedicated Kharkiv activist focused on championing the rights of women and LGBTQ+ individuals. She has been an integral part of the Kharkiv women’s association Sfera for many years and is a member of the KharkivPride team.
The wedding ceremony commenced near the registration building for civil status acts on Sumska Street, with the brides taking part in a traditional Ukrainian ceremony. Sprinkling oats, wheat, rice, buckwheat, candies, petals, and coins and capturing photos with guests were among the highlights. Following this, the brides took a stroll around the city.
Throwing bouquets and attaching a lock that symbolized their strong bond were integral parts of the ceremony. The hope for the future is that this symbolic wedding will ultimately lead to an official marriage for Alina and Stanislava.
As Ukraine still lacks marriage equality, events like KharkivPride play a crucial role in shining a light on this issue. The symbolic wedding not only showcased the love and commitment of Alina and Stanislava but also emphasized the need for equal rights for all couples.
The absence of marriage equality affects countless LGBTQ+ individuals in Ukraine, limiting their ability to solidify their love through legal recognition. By advocating for draft law No. 9103 on registered civil partnerships and promoting dialogue around marriage equality, it is hoped that Ukraine can progress towards a more inclusive society.
