Hollywood Stars Kevin and Sam Sorbo Express Concerns Over Artificial Intelligence in the Entertainment Industry

Hollywood actors Kevin Sorbo and his wife Sam Sorbo are raising their voices against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry. The couple, known for their roles in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and other family-friendly productions, recently spoke about their concerns during an interview with Fox News Digital.

Their main worry revolves around the potential for AI to manipulate actors’ likenesses and performances without proper consent or compensation. Kevin expressed his apprehensions, stating, I’ve always wanted to do a movie of Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando, apparently now I’ll be able to. But, I don’t think it would stand up in court that they could get away with that without paying the people.

Sam shared her husband’s concerns and expressed her belief that AI poses an extraordinary danger. She highlighted the lack of regulation surrounding AI technology and its stealthy nature, stating, I don’t know if they even know how to regulate it because it’s so stealthy. Sam also drew attention to the use of AI in reproducing artwork, which has caused an uproar in the art community.

The couple emphasized that if AI can recreate their likenesses and manipulate their performances, it poses a significant threat to the integrity of their craft. They believe it is crucial to fight against AI’s potential to undermine artists’ autonomy and creative expression.

Their concerns are in line with ongoing strikes by industry unions, including the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA). These unions have been on strike for months, and the use of AI has become a major point of contention in negotiations with studios.

The WGA recently met with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to discuss their demands. The guild has expressed concerns that the studios’ counteroffers do not adequately protect writers from the threats posed by AI technology.

While the AMPTP has stated its commitment to resolving the strike, the guild remains cautious, noting that the counteroffers have limitations and fail to address fundamental issues. The WGA believes the studios’ approach is more focused on pushing their agenda rather than engaging in genuine negotiations, leading to a deadlock in discussions.

The Sorbos’ concerns echo the broader anxieties within the industry. The use of AI in entertainment raises ethical questions about intellectual property rights, consent, and the potential for exploitation. As Hollywood continues to grapple with these challenges, industry unions and creatives are advocating for fair regulations that protect the rights and interests of artists.

In the meantime, the strike serves as a bold stand for creatives seeking to protect their craft and ensure that AI’s implementation in the entertainment industry is in line with ethical standards.
