AI-Detected Wildfires Squelched in Minutes: California Firefighters Team Up with UC San Diego for Game-Changing Technology
In a groundbreaking partnership between the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD), a new artificial intelligence (AI) system has been successfully implemented to detect and respond to wildfires in a matter of minutes. Since the AI system’s implementation just two months ago, it has successfully identified 77 fires before any 911 calls were made. This early detection has allowed fire departments to respond proactively and significantly reduce the damage caused by these wildfires. The success of the pilot project prompted its expansion to all 21 Cal Fire emergency command centers in the state.
