Whiteford Football Team Ranked No. 1 in Monroe County Region
The Whiteford Football Team is back and ready to dominate the field once again. After winning the Division 8 state championship last season, the team has been voted as the No. 1 team in the Monroe County Region by The Monroe News sports staff. However, being ranked at the top comes with its own set of challenges.
Last year, the top-ranked Monroe and second-ranked Milan teams both faced a string of injuries that ultimately kept them out of the state playoffs. On the other hand, the lowest-ranked team, Flat Rock, had a remarkable season, winning their first two playoff games since 1976 and reaching the Regional finals. This goes to show that these rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.
The rankings are simply a way to get ready for the 2023 season, which kicks off tonight. The Monroe News sports staff will revisit the rankings at midseason to reassess the teams’ positions.

Whiteford’s ranking at the top reflects their strong performance last season and the return of key players. Although they have lost standout player Shea Ruddy to graduation, most of the other key players are back, and his younger brother Ryin is ready to step into the quarterback position. Additionally, the team boasts nine returning starters on defense, setting them up for another successful season.
While the rankings provide some insight into the teams’ strengths, it’s important not to read too much into them. Many factors can influence a team’s performance, and injuries can dramatically impact outcomes. Ultimately, it is the players’ skills and teamwork that will determine their success on the field.
