Women in Manipur have stepped up to demand peace and normalcy in the northeastern Indian state, where ethnic violence has killed over 100 people and injured 320 since May 3. Thousands of vendors from Imphal’s Ima Keithal market began a three-day sit-in demonstration to call for peace and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens to identify infiltrators from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. The majority of the market’s sellers are women aged between 50 and 70, who have long been renowned for their socio-economic strength in the region. Women’s groups also led the fight against alcoholism in the 1970s, resulting in the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act of 1991, which remains in place despite partial lifting by the current Manipur government. Women’s activism has an extensive history in the region, spanning domestic issues, economic activities and mass agitation.
