Illegal e-bikes have been seized in a crackdown by authorities in Coventry city centre. Officers from the St Michaels Neighbourhood carried out an operation to address the growing problem of nuisance electric bike riders in the area. As a result, three illegal bikes were confiscated, with one of them found to have an output wattage almost three times higher than the maximum limit allowed of 250 watts.
The decision to tackle this issue comes in response to numerous complaints from local residents and businesses, who have voiced concerns about the negative impact these riders have on the city centre. In fact, a business group recently highlighted how these incidents are discouraging people from visiting the area.
This recent operation follows a similar crackdown that took place in May, during which a warning was issued to those who fail to comply with the rules. Nuisance e-bikes are covered by a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that has been implemented in the city. The PSPO was renewed last month, with the support of police Sergeant Dean Stew, who is the Coventry LPA lead for off-road bike crime and anti-social behavior.
Sergeant Stew expressed his approval of the PSPO, stating, We are happy to support the council in renewing this PSPO. We are listening to the community concerns in the area and know how much of an issue the anti-social use ‘e-bikes’ can be.
The PSPO not only addresses the issue of nuisance e-bike riding but also covers street trading, busking, and begging. It requires cyclists to ride through the city center in a careful and considerate manner and dismount when instructed by officers. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in a breach notice and potential fines of £100, or even a court summons.

Overall, authorities in Coventry are taking decisive action to tackle the problem of illegal e-bikes in the city center. By seizing these bikes and enforcing the PSPO, they aim to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for both residents and visitors alike. The crackdown on nuisance e-bike riding demonstrates the commitment of local law enforcement to address community concerns and maintain order in public spaces.
